LANCASTER, Mass. -- Childhood obesity is affecting more children in than ever, and some schools in Massachusetts said an early intervention plan appears to be working.
Boston television news station WCVB reported that the plan has children eating Brussels sprouts and liking it.
As part of a new fitness plan called Commit To Be Fit, some students are cutting back on television, exercising more and eating more vegetables."I actually don't watch TV very much," said student Allison Spratt. "I like broccoli and Brussels sprouts."Three Massachusetts schools, including the Mary Rowlandson Elementary School in Lancaster, are taking part in Commit To Be Fit, a program launched by Fallon Community Health Plan. The program was started after Fallon found that one in four Massachusetts high schoolers are obese or at great risk of becoming so.At the Commit To Be Fit Web site, there are downloadable activities for kids, ranging from anatomy crossword puzzles to mission nutrition scrambles. There are also resources for teachers to help track their students' progress.
