Teachers Allowed To Attend Prayer Events

Opponents Seek Legal Action

The Carlisle School District sparked debate after it voted to allow teachers to join students during prayer events on school grounds, Lancaster television news station WGAL reported.

The prayer event in question is the nationally recognized See You at the Pole Day, where students meet at the school's flagpole to pray.

Should Teachers Pray Too? | See You At The Pole

According to the See You at the Pole Day Web site, the event is held annually on the fourth Wednesday in September before school.

See You at the Pole Day is a student-initiated, student organized and student-led event -- but the Web site insists that it is not a demonstration or a rally. It is simply a chance for people to gather and pray for their schools, teachers, government and the nation as a whole.

In the past, teachers were allowed to participate in the event, but this year the district did not allow teachers to participate.

In a new vote, however, the school board voted 8-1 to allow teachers to participate.

"We're glad, and while we're glad though, we want to also be on record saying we're going to be vigilant, be mindful that in the future there are no reoccurrences," said Laszlo Pasztor, a supporter of teacher prayer. "While this may be the victory of a battle, it's not the end of the war."

Opponents of the measure certainly are looking for a way to fight back, and plan to take legal action against the board.

"It was a huge mistake. It's obviously against federal law. It's against the Constitution," said Jay Mootz, who opposes teacher prayer. "Eight board members voted with their hearts, I think, rather than with their heads."

Some are still confused about why teachers were initially barred from participating in the event.

"If the directive had not gone out that barred teachers in the first place, we wouldn't have come to this place," said teacher Cheryl Holquist. "And I have not yet gotten an answer as to why that even happened."
