San Diego, CA -- (Sports Network) - It appears Trevor Hoffman, the all-time saves leader in baseball, won't be closing games for the San Diego Padres in 2009.

Last week, San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said the team was trying to work out a deal with Hoffman, but he confirmed on Monday that the Padres have withdrawn their $4 million contract offer for Hoffman for next season.

In 2008, Hoffman made $7.5 million and compiled 30 saves to go with a 3-6 record and 3.77 ERA, his highest since the 1995 season.

For his career, Hoffman has 554 saves and a 2.78 ERA.

The 41-year-old right-hander, who has been a Padre since being acquired in 1993, could be headed to the Indians. According to the San Diego Union- Tribune, Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro said last week that if the Padres and Hoffman couldn't work out a deal, he would look into negotiating with the reliever.
