Bail Reduced For Actor Accused In Stabbing

UPDATED: 6:19 pm PDT September 5, 2008

Bail was reduced Friday for a Hollywood actor accused of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend and assaulting her male friend at her San Marcos home while her children slept, even though prosecutors added more charges.

Shelley Malil, 43, is accused of stabbing 35-year-old Kendra Beebe 20 times the night of Aug. 10. Prosecutors say the two previously had a "dating" relationship.

Malil, who was in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," was charged with attempted murder and allegations that the attack caused great bodily injury and that he personally used a knife.

At Malil's Aug. 13 arraignment, Judge Marshall Hockett raised his bail from $2 million to $10 million, noting that although he was only charged with stabbing Beebe, he had also fought with a male visitor who had been at the home.

On Friday, prosecutors added charges of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, but Vista Superior Court Judge Aaron Katz lowered his bail to $3 million.

Malil carried out a "prolonged attack," Deputy District Attorney Steve Carver told Hockett at Malil's Aug. 13 arraignment.

Authorities allege Malil came up behind Beebe on the back patio and began stabbing her as her two young children slept upstairs, and that the bloody attack continued through the house.

Of the 20 stab wounds, three were life-threatening, including one to each lung and one to the throat, just missing an artery, Carver said.

At some point, a male visitor, David Maldonado, disarmed Malil and kicked the knife away, Carver said. But the defendant allegedly grabbed a second knife and continued stabbing Beebe, ending up on the front porch where a next-door neighbor -- whom Carver called a "hero" -- disarmed Malil again.

Malil fled when he heard sirens, Carver said.

The defendant called someone and told them he was in Tijuana, and was also believed to have been in Sherman Oaks after the attack, the prosecutor said. He was taken into custody the night of Aug. 11 as he got off a train in Oceanside.

Malil -- also known as Shelley Mack -- has a 2005 misdemeanor conviction for hit-and-run.

In addition to film work, Malil was featured in Budweiser's "Wassup" TV ad campaign, which aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and has appeared in dozens of television shows, including "Reba," "JAG," "The West Wing," "NYPD Blue," and "Scrubs."
