SAN DIEGO -- A student at San Diego City College tested positive for tuberculosis, prompting county health officials Tuesday to notify students and faculty who were possibly exposed. The infected student attended classes at City College every weekday but Friday between Aug. 25 and Nov. 3, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.School officials have sent letters to about 190 students and faculty who may have been exposed, according to the HHSA.
"This serves as a reminder that TB is in our community," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "TB is treatable, and we recommend that those who may have been exposed get tested to determine whether or not they need treatment."Tuberculosis is not uncommon in San Diego, according to the HHSA, which has logged 201 cases so far this year. In 2007, there were 280 cases of the disease locally, according to health officials.Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease.
