NFL Game Summary - San Diego At Pittsburgh

POSTED: 6:12 pm PST November 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jeff Reed's 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a narrow 11-10 victory over the San Diego Chargers at a snowy and blustery Heinz Field.

Down 10-8 with 6:41 to play, Pittsburgh marched 73 yards downfield. Ben Roethlisberger converted a key 3rd-and-6 from the San Diego 41 with a seven- yard completion to Hines Ward, and Santonio Holmes caught a 13-yard pass the play after. The team ran down the rest of the clock to set up Reed's field goal at the end.

Roethlisberger went 31-for-41 passing for 308 yards for the Steelers (7-3), who hold a one-game edge over Baltimore for the top spot in the AFC North after the Ravens lost to the Giants. Willie Parker ran for 115 yards on 25 carries, and Ward caught 11 passes for 124 yards in the victory.

"It was time for me to [step up]," Roethlisberger said. "I hate to say it's time for us to do it, because some of the guys [have] been doing it all year. It was time for [me] to step up and really make some plays. I'm proud of the way our guys played tonight."

Philip Rivers struggled to fight the wintry conditions, completing 15-of-26 passes for 162 yards and two interceptions for the Chargers (4-6), who sit two games behind first-place Denver in the AFC West after the Broncos' victory over the Falcons on Sunday. LaDainian Tomlinson led the team in both rushing and receiving, garnering 100 total yards and a score on 18 carries and three receptions.

"Coming into this game, before the weather conditions were the way they were, I think as a staff we felt it would be a field position game," Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. "We had opportunities to make a couple of plays that could have given us the opportunity to win the game. We didn't capitalize.

Reed's 41-yard field goal on the Steelers' opening second half drive barely snuck inside the left post and gave Pittsburgh a slim 8-7 edge.

The Chargers put together a scoring drive early in the fourth. Starting from their own 18, Rivers found Malcolm Floyd and Chris Chambers for 15 and 11 yards, respectively. A 10-yard Tomlinson run got the offense down to the Steelers' 23, and on 3rd-and-10 Rivers hit Vincent Jackson for 17 yards down to the six.

The drive stalled from there, and Nate Kaeding put the Chargers up 10-8 with a 22-yard field goal with 6:41 to play.

After Reed's field goal with 11 seconds left, San Diego attempted a lateral play in the waning moments of the game. The ball was fumbled, and Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu picked up the loose ball and raced for a touchdown, appearing to make it a 17-10 final.

The referees initially let the play stand but after further consideration reversed their decision on the field, ruling that one of the laterals was, in fact, a forward pass. The penalty stopped the play at that point, negating the touchdown and keeping the score 11-10, the first time an NFL game has been decided by that score.

After Reed's missed field goal in the first quarter, the Chargers took over at their own 41. A pass interference play helped them get to the Steelers' three- yard line, and Tomlinson punched it in from there for the early lead.

Pittsburgh had a 4th-and-goal inside the one-yard line late in the first quarter, but Moore's rush was stuffed quickly and the Chargers took over on downs.

But the Steelers came up with a bit of consolation, as the defense forced a safety to make it 7-2.

San Diego had a good scoring chance late in the first half, but Rivers was intercepted inside the Steelers' 20.

Reed closed the gap going into halftime by hitting a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

Game Notes:

Chargers defensive lineman Luis Castillo left the game in the third quarter with a groin injury and did not return...Tomlinson's rushing touchdown was his first since Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders...The Steelers have won six of seven meetings with the Chargers...San Diego has never won in Pittsburgh... Holmes had 63 yards on five catches...Pittsburgh will take on Cincinnati at Heinz Field on Thursday night, while San Diego will return home to face Indianapolis next Sunday.
